pretty simple... black (or very dark) background, light text: good or bad?

I am rehashing my site (http://www.avenirex.com) and my portfolio within it. I was thinking of using a black background (ala pbase.com and other photo sites), as it seems to compliment the images better. But, there will be a certain amount of text. I've found articles that go both ways, but I'm still not sold necessarily.

thoughts?

oh, this was a trial run (I'm not sticking to it too much: http://www.avenirex.com/v6 )

edit: oh, and why does the title block display color perfectly in safari, but get butchered color-wise in IE windows? the background is a hex color, but the title is a .jpg, but created with the same hex... it's not really an issue, but I was just curious as a side note.
