Ok, am enchanted with the gmail "setting" panel... ~5 "tabs" at the top, obviously using some variant of hidden/visible to show different panels without a page fetch/store.

a) even by searching my cache and all the frames, where is the generated HTML going??!?! (so I can snoop)

b) have heard mention of js "layers" but not finding a nice tidy example (only overblown full menu systems).. is there a simple viewA/viewB example somewhere

c) if this isn't "layers" what are they using?

thanks,
Mike

A little more digging turned up

http://www.quirksmode.org/js/cross_dhtml.html

which seems pretty informative (plus just viewing the page source).
