Anyone here have much experience with Garage Game's Torque game engine?

Is it a toy for non-progammers or is it actually useful (I've got a CS degree and do game programming as a hobby in my spare time, since my real job has nothing to do with CS)?

I'm just not gifted enough to write a complete 3D engine myself whilst simultaenously doing all of the artwork, modeling, animation, music, sound, etc.. all by my lonesome, and am looking for a way to 'cheat'

I haven't tried the game engine in your post, but I wanted to let you know of another option. Blender3d ( www.blender3d.org ) is a 3D modeling / animation / game engine tool that costs $0. You might want to check it out as well.

A friend of mine bought it but hasn't done anything with it because he's too lazy. It looks quite nice, though - all of GarageGames' published titles are built with it.

Can't you download a demo as well?

I'd say it certainly isn't for non-programmers.
