Converting a URL to an IP Address?

I know the URL of my website's FTP server, which is like "ftp.myhost.extension", but I'd like to know what IP address corresponds to it. What's the easiest way to convert one to the other on a Macintosh?

Lookup using Network Utility (selecting the information to lookup as "Internet Address")?

Aha. I knew it would be something like that. I assume you can do this through the Terminal as well, right?

If you telnet or ftp into a web site, you'll usually (always?) get the IP address in response.

Odd. I have used these methods to look up my server, dbx2.pointinspace.com -- but if I replace that URL with the number I got, 66.151.191.100, my FTP client cannot connect. Changing the setting for the server back to dbx2.pointinspace.com works perfectly, though. Weird. What am I missing?

The old official way was to use 'nslookup' but that is being depriciated in favor of 'dig' but I don't like its output.

I went to the Terminal and typed: host dbx2.pointinspace.com and got the number 66.151.191.100 -- but that number didn't work with my FTP client even though the URL did. What's wrong?

If you type `ftp 66.151.191.100' n the terminal, it does indeed work. What client are you using?

You're right, that does work. Hmmmm.
I'm using Transmit 3.0.2 under Mac OS X 10.3.8.
