I have two registered domains.

Is it possible to configure the .htaccess file so that surfers are forwarded to the appropriate sub-directory based on the domain they are visiting?

I don't think that can be done via .htaccess; it needs to be done in the httpd.conf file instead. You can, of course, have a .htaccess file for each domain by putting them in the appropriate subfolders, but I think that actually setting up the two domains will require httpd.conf.

That depends on the system the server is on. On OSX it's in /etc/httpd/httpd.conf by default, but when you compile the server yourself you can put it almost anywhere. It's common to find it in the same directory as the server itself, only in conf instead of bin; for example if the server is in /opt/apache/bin then httpd.conf might be in /opt/apache/conf.
