mysql failed connection hiccups

not sure if this is the best topic to post this in but oh well:
For months we've had these hiccups when serving our website that makes it return a blank page instead of the actual site. This has something to do with mysql failed connections but we can't figure out how to fix it (there are other non web based scripts that fail retreiving data from mysql which shows that mysql is the likely culprit). Note: the mysql connections are to localhost.

server stats:
php 4.3.10
mysql 4.0.21
os x server 10.3.8 w/ all updates
dual 1ghz xserve 1gb ram
