I’m graduating next fall with a BS in CS. Luckily; I have enough time in my schedule to do a project. I am looking for a software project ideas involving Java, which would fulfill a need for OS X/Linux users. Also, it has to be done in 4-6 months time and preferably look good to perspective employers.I’ve kicked around a few ideas but they were all laughable hard or involve hardware($$$). So anything software that as OS X users you had to give up or the alternative isn't so hot would be great.

Here's an idea I've been wanting to do for a while, but I haven't had the time, and would probably be better suited to Java than Obj-C, anyway.

An app that parses the databases of forums such as this one, and presents threads to me in an outline view form, such that I don't have to download forum interface images every time I load a page.

Actually, arclite's idea is better done with JavaScript, not Java. I have been toying with this recently, but it is always going to be very dependent on the forum, and would best be done by the developers of the BBS software.
