I need help with creating (or using an existing) one of those Javascript vertical hover menus. The internet returned many links, most of which lead to junk or poorly written examples. Many of the better examples were written for new browser technology; I need something compatible with NS4+ and IE4+. Could someone suggest an example to base my creation off of or better yet a customizeable example.

Do you really need v4 browser support at this stage? According to the most recent stats, IE4 and NS4 users combined don't even make up 1% of global market share anymore. The only people left using NS4 are people in organizations with contractual obligations to do so, and these are unlikely to be allowed to view your site. Any machine which can run IE4 can be upgraded at least as far as IE5.5, the last version to run on Windows 95 (which was the minimum requirement for IE4).

Seriously. If you're going to cut off browser support like you mention, then it's time to raise the bar a bit. Go for IE5/NS6 at the least.

I agree with your statements, however cutting off v4 browser support is not an option. The company has all of the systems on a baselined Windows install and while many of the machines are in the process of being updated, many will still have older version of IE/NS as their only browser. That said, it has to be v4 browser compatible for at least a short while longer.

And for the example given, no. I'm looking for more along the lines of the blue horizontal menu available on macnn, with the Search and Quick Links menus as dropdowns.

Ahhh, right. When you said:

Ah, OK; I wasn't aware of that. So you do need v4 browser support. My apologies for presuming otherwise, and my condolences for having to work with v4 browsers.

Truth be told, it is unlikely that you will find a modern script which will support v4 browsers. You're going to have to either risk breaking newer browsers or accept graceful degradation (which shouldn't be a problem if the remaining v4-only machines are going to be upgraded in the foreseeable future). The tsunami menu won't work in v4 browsers, which is a shame, because it really does look nifty.

You might want to consider Suckerfish Dropdowns. It's an old script by today's standards, but it should work.
