Hello everyone. I'm new to these forums and relatively new to the whole mac thing. I must say that I find the Mac to be the perfect platform for development. However, having 'switched' from the Windows world, I have found at least one annoyance in Mac... particularly in Finder.

I'm sure you've all heard the debates about Finder's "Replace" vs. Explorer's "Replace" (which actually merges in the case of folders). I, like others, have lost data this way. Fortunately it was not important data, but that's beside the point. Many feel that a good solution would be to add a Merge option to the Replace dialog that pops up when moving or copying a folder.

How would I go about doing this? Folder Actions seem like they can achieve what I want... however, I want this dialog to be applied to all folders, not just one. I see that the Automator can do Finder plugins... but what I'm really looking for is a plugin that is always active, not one that you must activate yourself. Therefore, I don't think Automater can help me. Finally, I've heard that Finder is not easily extended due to it being "poorly coded/designed/etc."

All I want is to make a plugin, toggleable by the user, that will replace the standard replace dialog with one that adds a merge option.. and then merges folders like one would see in Windows Explorer.

I would appreciate any advice on how to accomplish this, especially on what method to use, whether it be AppleScript, Folder Actions, the Automator, or hacking Finder. I would like something that is easily installable/removable... so I'd like to avoid hacking Finder.

Thanks in advance.
