Is there such a thing? I cannot find anything at http://developer.apple.com.
I want to create an "extension" to iTunes that starts with iTunes. I need to do more than AppleScript will allow.

Although the old SoundJam SDK may still work, Apple has jealously guarded the plug-in functionality for anything other than visualizers. Nobody knows why they do this, but most of the non-visual plugins have required a lot of hard work and reverse engineering, and Apple Legal tends to go after anyone who tries it.
I believe this to be a foolish move on Apple's part, but I don't work for them, so I'm not exactly in a position to make decisions.

Hmmm... not familiar with SoundJam, but I understand that was iTunes before it was iTunes?
I understand there was a plug-in that took music from an iPod that Apple quickly put the hammer down on, but my plug-in wouldn't be anything malicious or illegal. It's a shame that one of Apple's flagship apps is so "closed".
Thanks for the info. I'll see what I can find. I have no intention of entering the reverse engineering fray for the sake of a fun little project.

If you want to do a codec, there is a system API for that. Just in case that's it.

No, it's not a codec, more like a playlist "helper" app that does extra stuff.

Your only option is to contact DTS and see what they suggest.

Would you happen to know what email address at apple.com would be most suitable? Obviously dts@apple.com is for actual technical support. I am not paying $195 US to ask them if they have an iTunes SDK. I don't need to know that badly
Thanks.

You may have thought of this already but just in case: Are any of the existing plug-ins open source? Might be worth a look to see how they do it if they are.

Since Apple keeps the stuff under lock and key, making it open source would likely violate an NDA.
