I currently have an older, badly organised set-up of three unlinked Macs as below:
8600 (OS8) - Linked to Epson scanner by SCSI to a CD burner
G3 (OS. 8.6 or 5) Linked by Ethernet to a T Base hub to an Epson 5200 (A3), linked to A3 wacom (serial) and rj45 in to the Mac (?)
G4, 500 Dual tower – 21 monitor, internal modem, Ethernet, one slot filled with something? Should I buy an Airport card to gain access to broadband already existing in the house (ISP not known)?
- I want OSX Tiger no all (right/ wrong?)
Not on the 8600, you
could use xpostfacto, but that probably won't be worth it. The G3, if it has built in serial (beige) I think you'll be out of luck, Tiger needs a mac with built in firewire. Again, you could use xpostfacto to get it up and running, but probably not worth it. The G4, get a copy of Tiger and you're away.
- I don’t want to loose anything as I have it set up already (extra drive?)
Well, if you start playing with xpostfacto on the 8600 and the G3 you might find that your devices don't have drivers for use in Tiger. I'd say leave the 8600 and G3 alone. Don't touch
anything.
- I have moved to a flat with wireless net connection – do I need an airport card for the existing signal?
Here you have two options. You can buy an airport card for the G4 or buy a wireless access point and connect it your ethernet hub. I'd buy the access point as you'll have to look on ebay for an original airport card and they're still quite expensive.
- Can I use the SCSI scanner, CD burner (only), Wacom (serial) and bin the Epson 5200?
Are you asking for permission? Yes? No? Do you need the Epson 5200?
- All the various versions of creative software – will they work?
Most older versions of apps will run in classic, you may experience a few problems/bugs. You'll be far better off with a version that will run natively in Tiger.
- I want to make a short film / animation using black and white stills, sketches, footage, sound, noise (+abstract sounds). If I take your advice and buy the following is this the right set-up and can I have the three Macs working together on OSX Tiger?
Macromedia Flash? Final Cut Express/Pro? iMovie? Will it work together? I'm not sure what you mean. You'll be able to scan and print with the older computers (the 8600 and the G3) and run Tiger and which ever app you choose on the G5.
For that I intend to buy a Cannon powershot S70 for wide angle (C28 min). Stills and video 7.1Mp (portability, versatility). Also a Tascam Pocketstudio 5 for a random sounds / noise recording. I have got a (yes poxy?) Casio CTK 731 with no Mac support / compatibility (???) Can I link this directly by the cable to Mac G4? If so, how??
Link the S70? Most likely. The Tascam? No idea. Take a look at the makers website.
I’d appreciate any advice on how to set this up effectively without it costing the Earth and cocking up too much existing stuff.
Thanks!!!!
The only **** up you made was posting this in the developer forum.

You might get better results breaking this post down into its respective parts. 1. Powermac 2. Software 3. Networking and 4. Peripherals and posting these questions in the correct forums.
