I'm sitting in a class right now about metadata. We've been learning about RDF, FOAF, Dublin Core, etc. for a couple weeks... I still don't really get it. Has this stuff been used to do anything interesting other than make cute relationship graphs with arrows pointing from oval to oval (or rectangle)?

Seems to me metadata just means "greater information related to a specific thing" – like categories a blog post would fall under, for example. Or information about who authored a document, the last time it was modified, the program used to create it, etc.

Yeah, schools aren't the greatest for web developers. I think you can learn a lot more by just RSSing a few good websites and reading them religiously (and pick up a few good books too).

And I'm not even in college yet! Jeezus.

I know what metadata means, and there's more to it than what you mentioned. But I'm wondering if there's actually been anything done with metadata on the internet, specifically RDF, that's actually interesting (and something you couldn't do otherwise).

Incidentally, this is a class I'm taking as filler. I'm not going to school to learn web design, nor am I an aspiring web designer.
