I'd like to run my own search engine. Maybe I could get a handful of cheap computers and network them to run a search engine spidering program. I'd like to run queries against the system. I'm not hoping to compete with the big boys, I just want to have a simple program. It's ok if the response rate isn't the fastest.

Thanks

A Google search tells me there are a whole bushel of 'em.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I did some searching found some items shortly after posting my question. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Does anyone have any experience with the cost and efforts involved with running a search engine? I'd like to do a business analysis of doing a search engine. I want to determine how many computers are required (cheap linux systems acting as drones, and some servers to store data results), how I'd back them up, etc. Basically, I want to assess how much money and time it would cost to create and run a search engine.

It would be fantastic if anyone here has any experience or knowledge of the needs/demands of building a search engine. Since there are over 1400 SE's out there (according to Yahoo), I don't want to re-invent the wheel since it's been done so many times before.

Thanks :-)
