This is a question for anyone even slightly familiar with USB integration on Mac's, Device Drivers on Mac's, or Wacom Tablet's. Anything you can offer to help will be hugely appreciated.
Right, there is quite a long story to this so I'm gonna condense it into bite-size bullet points:
• me using Apple PowerBook G4
• bought wacom volito tablet
• volito tablet does not include Mac drivers
• installed graphire/intuos (another wacom tablet) driver
• friend sent me intuos preference file
• I have fooled the driver into thinking my volito is an intuos by overriding the preference file with my intuos preference file.
• BUT the changes I'm making (either in the control panel or manually in the preference file itself) aren't affecting the tablet's configuration.
• in the preference file I saw: "CommPort 185597952" among the other variables and I'm pretty sure it is for the port the tablet is connected on.
• BUT this is the comm port of my friend, who sent me the file, and I need to set it to my PowerBook's USB port.
Basically, does anyone know how I can find the correct data to enter here. Could the wacom driver software use a special code for the ports or will the exact number be somewhere in my system for me to simply change this variable to?
I have already checked in my System Profiler and found this:
USB Bus:
Vendor Name: Apple Computer, Inc.
Product ID: 32773 ($8005)
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Bus Power (mA): 500
FT-0405-UV1.4-1:
Vendor Name: WACOM
Speed: Up to 1.5 Mb/sec
Product ID: 96 ($60)
Bus Power (mA): 500
But I don't know if any of that information is what I need. There is no obvious "Comm Port ID" or anything.
One thing I could do is connect a compatible wacom tablet to my PowerBook and see what it gets assigned in the preferences file. But I'm not in an area where I can get another easily. And the idea of buying one off ebay, plugging it in to get this information, then putting it back up for sale on ebay, really isn't very attractive

//EDIT: Oh and if it helps, the mac pref. file had: CommPort 185597952 and in the same pref. file on a windows computer with the windows driver, it has: CommPort \\?\HID#VID_056A&PID_0060&COL02#5&257E 0CD&0&0001#{4D1E55B2-F16F-11CF-88CB-001111000030} (both mac & windows wacom drivers write to the preference/data file in the same way.

Unfortunately, my experience is USB-RS232 adapter related, so I can't help you out too much with controlling a USB device. I can offer this info, though: that number you see is likely the device's serial number, so you'd probably be shooting yourself in the foot to assume all Wacoms use the same number. I tried looking into how the Apple System Profiler gets this information, but as it wasn't *necessary* for opening a serial port, I gave up and moved on. It looks like the stuff the ASP uses is in a private framework, so you may have to probe the USB bus yourself. I'm sure Apple has documentation on this. Check their website. http://developer.apple.com/

Ah! I checked with an OS X developer at Wacom and he told me an old driver has a 'bug' in it, which actually supports the Volito tablet! Here it is, in case anyone in the future ever finds this thread: http://www.wacom.com/productsupport/...mp;product=ETA Driver V. 4.7.9-2

Of course, I was wanting the name that the user gave the serial port in System Preferences' Network pane, as that would make more sense than spitting out the brand and serial number ( what if you have more than one of the same thing? ).
