I've been trying to think of some uses for my old Performa 6360 (don't laugh she hasn't failed me yet). With $0 to spend on it I'm kind of stuck with the hardware that's in it (which is stock, but the ram was upped to 95mb).

I remeber reading this article when it came out, but now it seems dated with all that's changed since '01.

http://www.macworld.com/2001/07/bc/h...rver/index.php

I've been entertaining the thought of switching the OS to some version of Linux (I hear it's kind of a pain on older macs), so if I don't have to all the better.

With that is there any software capable of running newer blogging software on OS 9 or older? I'm thinking it would need to install/run MySQL/PHP to run anything (Wordpress preferably).

If anyone has any suggestions or any Linux help/info. I just want to tinker and see if I can even get it done.

Thanks

Ernie

Since there are no OS 9 binaries of MySQL and PHP available, you'd have to compile the source code. I don't think such tools exist in OS 9.

You'd be best off installing some sort of Linux. Let me know if you have questions about using Linux, perhaps I can help?

I don't mind doing a little tinkering to get it up and running, but my hair is falling out as it is and I don't want to start pulling more out.

Since there's about a billion google results I'm just looking for some info/links that would help make this as painless as possable.

I'm not sure which distro is the easiest to install, I'm using 10.3 on my current ibook, but I'm not super comfy using the command line. If everthing is spelled out for me then I'm ok.

I've done some searching with mixed results, I just wasn't sure if anyone here could point me in a solid direction.

Thanks

Ubuntu Linux is probably the most user-friendly Linux distribution, this project really targets users looking for ease-of-use (although I've never used it personally).

What I would do is download and burn a Ubuntu Linux Live CD. Live CDs allow you to boot off the CD and actually use Linux and play around with it without having to commit or make any changes to your machine. Make sure you burn the CD in the right format (if the download image is an ISO, I *think* that using Disk Utility will burn the ISO properly, but I believe that Disk Utility will not create new ISO images).

Ubuntu supports PowerPC, but I'm not sure how far back it goes. I'd try booting off of the CD. If it works, install it. If it doesn't, let us know.

Thanks for the info. I've added that to the list I'm researching.

Mainly right now I'm looking at what will fit on my stock HD (1.2gig), it looks like I need OS 8 or 9 to do the set up and partitioning part (maybe even once everythings installed). Also do what I want it to do, webhosting and just getting comfy with linux. I'm looking for something that kind of user friendly, but everything doesn't have to be point and click.

I know a challenge is ahead, I just want my hair to fall out naturally. =)

This seems like a pretty good walk through:

Now Just getting a gui walk through.

I won't be doing much but research for a while, I've got 2 bathrooms to remodel first.

Thanks

I used to run MkLinux a long time ago, it was frustrating. It is a completely dead project now, AFAIK, since Apple has stopped developing it a long time ago. You cannot get any modern apps/services to compile on it.

Your challenge will not only be find a Unix that will install on your machine, but also finding a modern distribution that is supported and will allow you to install modern software on.

If I could talk my daughter out of her 7300 (or 7600, I'm not sure) I'd install OS X on that and just use it. Maybe if I sell some stuff on ebay I'll just buy a cheap machine that can run X.
