I want to spam proof a new contact form I am setting up on a site revamp I am doing now.

I need some advice on what to use to process the contents of the form and email it back to me in such a way it does not attract the flood of spam I am getting now from just listing an email address.

On a fairly unexciting site I run (to most outsiders), I found that even a form gets hit occasionally... apparent by bots.

I'm curious about the "type here the characters you see" sort of form to reduce that. Anybody know of an inexpensive packaged system for producing those? ...or how they do it (are the graphic versions hand drawn? generated?)?

You need a PHP or perl based form that doesn't expose the email address in HTML to prevent bots from searching the code for email addresses. If your host provides a control panel you may find such a script there in the CGI center or you can find perl based forms by searching the web.

Try

This wizard will create the PHP or perl code for you and the HTML form.
