I am a web dev and although I do most of my stuff 'at work', I would like to do some personal stuff at home. I have just got a Intel iMac (I did have a dual G5 but It felt like overkill as I don't do any freelance work) alas all the articles relating to setting up the webserver are slightly outdated (they all seem to reference 10.3 with additions for 10.4.0) and link to PPC only versions of the required installers This (Entropy) for PHP and This for MySQL.
Would I have to compile my own versions for Intel (something I am not 100% familiar with)?

After installing Mysql5.x there was a problem in using it because the PHP4.x version that comes with 10.4 Intel expected a different location for the 'sock'. PHPmyAdmin will yieldas 2002 Error code. I found instructions in MACfixit. Essentially you reset the php.ini mysql_sock to /usr/local/mysql.sock Took only a minute to edit and restart apache.
I have seen instructions for PHP5 compiling but no package installer yet. Thought about it, but time was not on my side. Still had to copy over alot of db's from the old laptop.

I'm sure if you crossed Marc Liyanage's palm with gold (or at the very least threw a few dollars at his paypal account) that would be enough motivation for him to create an Intel version of the installer. Drop him a line and see if he's onto it!

In the early days we all had to compile our own. Of course, since PHP.net and Apple both link up to his stuff, keeping a current version supports their position...
I was using phpmyadmin on a 8000 row db and it is quite pleasing on my 1.8MPB looks like I will be quite happy with performance.

Compiling on your own is still the best way to do it, that way you can enable the features you want, and disable the ones you don't want.
