Hi,
I'd like to add a discussion board on a website I'm designing in Dreamweaver. This is the first time I've explored adding a forum to a site and I appreciate any advice or good directions anyone can provide.
thanks!

PHPBB is my favorite...others may disagree. Pretty much any decent forum setup will require mySQL and PHP, so make sure your hosting company supports it.

Thanks, I had looked into this one as well as vBulletin. As this will be my first site with a forum, is this difficult to build? It seems like its a basic install into the public folder on the server (I'm sure there is much more involved but it seems that straight forward).
How much PHP do I need to know to be able to install and customize a forum?
thanks!

You can install a forum with very little programing knowledge. Modifying it will require a bit more skill, but most mods are documented so that beginners can work out how to use them. If your host offers Fantastico, you can do a one click installation (not my preferred method, but it seems to be popular).

Thanks for the suggestions/recommendations. I check the host for my own website and they do offer fantastico with phpBB2 and SMF.
It seems there are several options for free forum software which leads me to ask: What are the advantages of paid forum software like vBulletin verses the free ones?

It depends just like anything else. Very popular opensource products, mysql, apache, php are popular because they have very good to excellent communities that share like many of these suggestions. You might get better support with a commercial product. My experience is not necessarily so.

Which is the most compatible with Dreamweaver and which is the best for a beginner?

Most are designed not to be used with other apps. They have skin generators/libraries and customization menus. Because of the intimate involvement with the data engine, think how easy it would be to break the tight code they contain.
