There's already an open-source clone out there called GNUStepWeb, but it doesn't seem to have fared all that well. I doubt the story would be any different if the "real" WebObjects were to go open-source.

I agree. Too clunky, too proprietary, too inapplicable to other situations.
In another discussion I've heard the developing WO with tools based on Eclipse/Java, does have some merits. Some of the other developers are also highly recommending RoR any comments on those?
