I'm currently hosted at dreamhost, and previously powweb.
Now I'm considering making another switch to 1and1.
Does anyone have any opinions about them? good or bad?
I'm leaning more towards them because of the [even] cheaper rate than the other two, more space, and webDAV support.
From my research online, I've read bad things in regards to their billing practices (auto-billing customers even though they said not to, etc.) ...... so I'm a little weiry about jumping right into them......
any help would be greatly appreciated in this decision, as they do seem to be a good provider

I don't know about hosting, but I use them for less important domain names and have no complaints. I don't know if they're as generous with space and services as dreamhost reportedly is. They're a pretty-bare bones outfit.

I have a client that uses 1&1, it's not anything spectacular, but it's more than enough for a decent website. Also, I'm not sure how they pulled this off, but they're paying $5/year...

Why are you switching hosts? Are you having problems with your existing ones? If so, you might be better to increase your budget rather than decrease it.

I'm really over DH's support system (no phone number to call, slow email responses).
I would actually consider bumping up my budget if there was a host that had over 10+GB of storage AND webDAV support.
Suggestions?

I'm not sure about WebDAV hosts, so I can't make any suggestions, but if you want phone support along with a hosting plan with your specifications, you are probably going to be looking at $30+ per month from a decent host. However, if you just want rapid ticket/email support that would probably drop back to ~$25. Either way, the more you spend, the better quality of service you will get. You just need to find a good compromise between price and support requirements.

I have two domains on 1and1, and while (as Big Mac says) they're not spectacular, they're well behaved. They are nicely professional and offer some nice tools for development and maintenance. And their price is great too; I'm spending less than $60 for the year for two domains, a passle of email addresses and so on. Traffic bandwith limits are more than adequate for me, but they are there so read the fine print.

I've just left Dream Host for 1and1. The reviews around the net seem to be better, and though it's not important, they're less expensive then Dream Host. They also have support that actually responds.

My experience with 1&1 in the UK is incredibly poor, on several occasions I have used them for web hosting and domains and they consistently do not allow me to cancel my account at any time.
I don't want to go into the details but they are the poorest company I have ever dealt with.

I really appreciate the 1and1 approach to domain REGISTRATION. Very smoothe control panel... and I can change HOSTING easily on my own through that CP's DNS section (without having to email or explain to whiny sales department about "why I am switching to elsewhere for hosting."
On the other hand, I was annoyed that they had a fee (tho only $7) when I wanted to switch a domain hosted with them merely to a different PACKAGE that I had with them.
(There's always something to grouse about.)
