Seeking to find a Mac OS or OS X ICL-Icon Extractor...

Note: My intention originally was in part to look at a large number of Windows ICL-icon files of "Classic" Mac OS icons and OS X icons, to see how well some of the Windows images of Mac icons looked compared to the Mac originals, but I ran into not being able to view the ICL-icon files I downloaded on my 604e CPU machines running Mac OS 8.6 and Mac OS 9.1, nor on my G3 CPU and G4 CPU machines running OS X builds (I don't own any Intel/Windows machines, only PowerPC Macs).

I also haven't been able to find out what you call the older Macintosh icon formats (IC?) and what .xxx file extension names are for Macintosh Operating System 6.x.x, Macintosh Operating System 7.x.x, Mac OS 8.x, and Mac OS 9.x.x icons listed anywhere, only that "ICN" is listed as the default icon format for OS X, with .icn being the file extension name...

There are several software tools for "Classic" Mac OS and for OS X builds for extracting / converting Windows ICO-icon files into "Classic" Mac OS and OS X icons, but there are NO "Classic" Mac OS or OS X tools for converting Windows ICL-icon files into "Classic" Mac OS and OS X icons, that I can find anywhere.

Has anyone written an ICL-Icon Extractor for Apple Mac OS 8.6 through Mac OS 9.2.2?

Has anyone written an ICL-Icon Extractor for Apple OS X 10.1.5 "Puma"through OS X 10.4.x "Tiger"?

Hmm. I don't know of a program that just extracts icons, but you could use ResEdit (runs on OS 9.2.2 and earlier). You can open up any file/application and copy out the icons manually and paste to your favorite image-editing program. You can get ResEdit here, for example: Pure Mac: Programming and Scripting - Software for Macintosh

If you are trying to copy the icon from a document, it usually isn't stored in the document itself; you should open the appropriate application in ResEdit. Alternatively, if you just want the icon that you see in the finder, you can select the file in the finder, get info on it, and copy the icon from the get info window (you have to select it first, before copying!).

ICL is a Windows icon format that ResEdit doesn't read or convert; "Classic" Mac OS and OS X icons under "Classic" Mac OS or under OS X are not the issue (and they can be opened in ResEdit).

The issue is being able to actually read and convert the Windows ICL icon format while booted under "Classic" Mac OS 8.x/9.x.x and under OS X builds.

Under "Classic" Mac OS 8.x/9.x.x and under OS X builds, we do have programs that allow the reading and extracting of the Windows ICO icon format, but we lack similar tools for the Windows ICL icon format.

Is there a Windows-side ICL->ICO converter?

Many of the Google searches I did looking for a "Classic" Mac OS or OS X lead to links to programs like Icon Empire "ICL-Icon Extractor" for Windows http://www.iconempire.com/icl-icon-extractor/

ICL-Icon Extractor for Windows:
Extract icon images from ICO, CUR, ANI, EXE, ICL, DLL, SCR, IL, NIL, DCR, RES, OCX, VBX, DPL, BPL and other libraries
Extract icon images from ZIP and RAR archives
Extract and save Windows Vista icons
Extract icons from Mac OS files
Store icons that you found in special ICC icon collection format with icon source information
Sort icons inside collections
Split icon libraries into individual icon files
Customize standard Windows icons
Rebuild and repair the icon cache

Note: Apple corporate staff's reply to this issue was: "sounds like a developer technical support question" and a suggestion of sending this particular issue to the Apple developer program.

However, I don't know which staff at the Apple developer site to forward the issue to, as I don't yet know which Apple developer staff are working on graphics, icons, and/or on icon conversion from non-"Classic" Mac OS and non-OS X icons...

It is my understanding that the Windows .icl icon file is a form of a .dll resources file with Windows OS executable formats...

Download the fully functional 30 day trial of the Axialis Icon Workshop. It will do exactly what you are trying to accomplish.

An .icl file is an "icon library", which contains multiple icons. The Icon Workshop will allow you to open .icl files and extract the individual icons. You can then modify the icons however you wish, and save them in any Windows and/or Mac format. This program has virtually no learning curve, and is completely up to date, including support for 256x256 OSX and Windows Vista icons.

For those who like to "play" with icons, the Axialis Icon Workshop is the perfect tool, as it will do everything that you need, specifically for icons, in a very simple, user-friendly format.
