Hi,

Could anyone recommend a book out of this selection

http://www.play.com/Books/Books/6-/S...searchsource=0

I was thinking of going to go for the top one and wandered if it was good or not?

Thanks for your time

Also as I am just going to be writing simple apps to start with will the version of xcode 2.4 off the CD be ok or is it definately worth downloading xcode 2.4.1? The reason i ask this is because at the moment I am getting 10kb download speed from the apple servers at the moment and I dont want to be leaving my macbook on for 24 hours if the one on the cd is ok.

i'm not sure what your background is or what you plan to do, but you might want a cocoa programming book as well if you want to write mac applications (and don't know how to already). those books seem to be just about the nuts and bolts of using the application xcode for those who want to delve deeper into it's features. i might be wrong.

i haven't seen any of those books so i can't offer any advice, but hillegasses' book is a good intro to objective-c.

it probably is fine just to stick with the cd unless there is something really important you need 2.4.1 for, and if you're just beginning, probably not.

hope this helps some.

Thank you very much that does help. I was assuming that the xcode book would probably tell me how to use cocoa too but I think you are right and I would be better being a objective c centric book.

3 years ago I graduated in Computer Science and did java programming within the course but I was never majorly interested (and now I wish I hadnt wasted the chances). I passed my programming modules but only with low marks so I would in theory be learning the majority of my programming skills from scratch.

Thanks for the suggestions anyone elses comments would also be greatly appreciated.

i started learning cocoa january this year. this is the path i'm taking.
1:Amazon.com: Programming in Objective-C: Books: Stephen Kochan

2:Amazon.com: Cocoa(R) Programming for Mac(R) OS X (2nd Edition): Books: Aaron Hillegass

3:Amazon.com: Advanced Mac OS X Programming (2nd Edition of Core Mac OS X & Unix Programming): Books: Mark Dalrymple,Aaron Hillegass

1 & 2 have been awesome. currently in last chapter of 2. Starting 3 in a week. that's in no way reflective of how long is should take to get through them, i'm only getting 20 minutes a day and i had a 3 month hiatus.

also coca dev central has helped a lot too.

good luck!
