Hi

I'm in two minds about buy a .Mac account to host a website for my university work.

I've created a small 'test site' with two podcasts, a movie trailer, and three .pdf scripts for downloading, and the total size when "published to folder" is 18.2MB. There is A LOT more going onto the site, so I assume it's going to exceed the 1GB apple gives.

I'm in the UK and looked at the prices for .Mac Account. £68.99 (annual price — includes 1 GB combined .Mac Mail & iDisk storage) - This is the basic package that Apple offer.
If it exceeds the 1GB do i pay another £34.99 on top of the annual price for another 1GB?

I've also searched for another host and ukhost4u.com offers 2GB for £39.99.
The only things is, I don't know what iWeb/.Mac features i will loose out on. Any ideas?

Even a list of the Pros & Cons to help me make up my mind.

THANKS to anyone for help and advice.

Hi,

I dont have time to make lists or talk in depth about features you'll miss out on, but if its strictly hosting you want then you can't do any better than going to siteground.com you'll get loads of space and a free .com address to it. You have built in tools such as Cpanel and it is fantastic. It costs roughly £39.99 for the year, you will have over 1000 pop3 email accounts shoulf you wish and you can rely on them for an excellent service.

If you are comfortable uploading sites via ftp then you can't go wrong using these people.

You can come through me to get it sorted if you want I may even be able to get you a discount from them as I do a lot of business with them

Hope this helps.

.Mac offers integration between Apple web-related apps and their service, but that's about it. Even with iWeb, there is an export feature. There are non-Apple photo hosting options too, such as the iPhoto2Gallery plug.

I have a hard time recommending .Mac for anyone, to be honest, in part because I provide most of these services myself, but also because I just don't see the value.

Doesn't your University offer web hosting services?
