I want to improve my website's ranking vis-à-vis specific search terms or queries. So if my business was to sell widgets, I would like to be more likely to appear higher in the search results should someone enter “widget” into their favorite search engine. My questions are:
  1. If “keywords” are not synonymous with “search terms” (i.e., that which a user enters into Google, Yahoo!, MSN, or whatever search engine), then what is the difference between the two?
  2. How do I figure out my current ranking for a specific keyword and then track how much it improves or degrades over time? I have a Google Analytics account already, but it's not clear how to do this with that tool.
