I have an external firewire hard-drive that I would like to back up my Home folder onto. Is there a script to do this for me?

cp -R ~username /Volumes/externalname

In the terminal should do it. Perhaps someone else can wrap some applescript around that so you can have an icon to click on.

Thanks so much for the Terminal code. I forgot to mention I wanted to backup on a folder on my External hard-drive. Is this possible? If so, please let me know.

This is an Apple page which suggests a method for automatically copying (backup) files to an external disk as soon as the external disk is mounted/plugged in.

Apple - Software - AppleScript - Folder Actions
