My brother and his friend tried to perform a short-name change on the mac, but ended up going through a bunch of problems and ended up losing all the files, i put up a post in another section of this forum but was advised to try here since it was related to loss of files.

In the process of trying to do this short-name change, they tried to manually back up about 90 gig of files onto another user desktop, during the transfer the process restarted automatically and they hit cancel.

I am running Leopard 10.5.1 and ran the disk utility to see if this file transfer caused this, there were a few errors which got fixed, but the missing files are no where to be found. I am currently downloading Disk Warrior and will try to use that soon. I'm really lost, i'm not a big mac person, we only purchased a mac recently so still learning things on it.

If anyone can help me in anyway, it will be most appreciated, i dont know if whether my problem is because of the short-name change or because of the file transfer, i just want to get my files back as i had some really important business info on there.

There are a few tutorials out there on changing folders in the /user section, but it doesnt work with leopard, also the files are no where to be found even by using spotlight.

I did find one folder using spotlight

but once opening the folder it gave me a message to delete, fix the alias, i hit fix alias and asks me to locate original files, but i have no idea where they are.

here's the screeny of that

I hope someone can come up with something. GIVE ME HOPE PEOPLE, lol.

Edit: Just adding that the hard drive size is the same as before, if anything it has 30 gigs more of info due to the manual transfer my brother tried to do, but due to hitting cancel the rest of the 60 out of 90 gigs didnt get transfered, so i dont think the information has gone anywhere, its just hid itself.

Thanks in advanced to anyone willing to help out. cheers.

This isn't related to development. Your original thread in Mac OS X was in the right place.
