Hi there. I am a proud owner of a new 24" iMac and as much I am proud I am disappointed as well. The display is much brighter to the left and dimmer to the right. I took it back to the store and they replaced it with another one, just to have exactly the same problem.

Uneven brightness is not the only problem. The other one is that this thing is damn bright, even at the lowest setting. I use "Shades" and it helps a lot. However, the darker I go, the more obvious the gradient is.

The question is this - is it possible to make a screen overlay with a custom gradient? To illustrate what I'm talking about ... I'd like to have a screen overlay just like the one when you switch on the Dashboard, a transparent black "film" that dims the screen to an acceptable level. What I'd also like is to have it darker on the left and lighter on the right to compensate for the uneven brightness of the screen.

Can this be done?

Just take it back to the store again and make sure that they check the next one in the store before they give it to you. It's obviously possible to make an overlay, but I doubt you'll be able to make one that adequately cancels out a hardware defect.

I think the problem is same on all 24" iMacs and I'm weighing up between keeping it and living with it with the hope someone makes an overlay, or returning it and taking my money back. But what then ... MacMini with high quality Dell monitor is the only other thing that comes to mind. I don't think I like that option either.

I'm pretty sure it isn't the same on all 24" iMacs. The ones I've used have not been much brighter on one side.

Anyway, like I said, making a gradient over the screen is easy, but making one that doesn't just make things look even worse would be quite tricky.
