I know very little about I-Macs, but am willing to learn.
In particular where do I find a FREE version of gcc/g++
for my I-Mac 5-flavor, G3 with OS 9. I know there has
to be one. I can get to the terminal and it looks like it
comes up with csh, calls the system Darwin! but no cc or
gcc, it would be cool to be able to port some of my X86 stuff
I have working under Linux to the I-mac, but for now it's
only usefull as a head end for my stereo....

You're not using OS 9 if you have Terminal on your system. The Xcode Tools (which include Apple's version of GCC) should be available on your system install disk.
