... to set up a forum like you have here at MacNN. I would only need the equivalent of one topic and then all the threads that are created on that topic (but hey who knows what I might need in time but one will do for start).

I want to set up a web-page and I want to put a forum on it (like this one) can you tell me how where I can get easy to follow information?

I'm not sure if a forum is a bit ambitious for a beginner but I want to know how to do it and attemp one any way. I love a challenge!!! And I really think that this forum set up is the best I've seen so far.

Clear easy to follow etc...

Thanks

If you have a cgi-bin, you can have forums like these. All you need is time, and patience.

First: Go to http://www.ikonboard.com. It is the best free BBS out there (IMHO).

Second: Download it. Then unzip it.

Third: Follow the instructions exactly.

Fourth: Pray it works.

It's not the easiest thing you've ever done, but it is a good challenge. It's one of those things where the more you do it, the easier it gets. You do need a cgi-bin however, which proabably requires your own server. (usually costs money)

If you want to simplify the process, http://www.ezboard.com offers free forums that they host. Check them out.

Hope this helps,

iKonboard should work fine under OS X. It may take a bit more work to get it to work however. In your "Library" folder (the one on the main HD), there is a folder called Webserver, then in that a folder called CGI-Executables, or something like that (I don't have X installed now). That is your cgi-bin under OS X. Wghen you're done setting it up, turn on the webserver - System Preferences --> Network --> Last Tab.
