I frequently boot from a CD which sets the screen to 640 x 480. When I go back to booting from my hard drive, at 1024 x 768, all my carefully placed desktop icons are messed up. Could someone show me how to write a script that moves all the icons back to their permanent, predefined locations? The items never change name and always are in the same place. Thanks!

“Finder Workspaces” works well for this. It remembers and restores icon positions as well as open folders and window positions. Free, at

Glad you found what you need, but FYI, it is very simple to do-it-yourself:

Open AppleScript, begin recording.
Move each icon to where you want it (even if you move it just a pixel or two)
Stop recording, save as an application.
That's it. Now you can click on that script and your icons will go to where you want them.

The absolute best utility is "Desktop Resetter".

Get it at : http://www.versiontracker.com
