I have been reading some HTML books and none of them abide by the strict HTML 4.0 standards. I looked at a couple of web tutorials and ran the sample page through iCab and iCab always gives me many errors or warnings. Anyone know of a good book and/or site. Thanks.

The best way to learn is to print out code from the www.w3c.org (WWW consortium) and figure out what each tag does by comparring it to a printout of the actual page.

Also, HTML 4.01 has CSS deeply intwined into it, so you will need to learn that as well. May I suggest the book called "Core CSS."

Very good reference.

I dunno about books on HTML. I learned it using the method above.

Best books on this are 'HTML - the Definitive Guide' and 'Dynamic HTML - the Definitive Guide' both by O'Reilly. I'd go with the second, because despite the title it *fully* covers HTML, Javascript, CSS and the Document Object Model. Very very good value for money.

I agree with the previous posters...

Yes, you *need* to keep up with the happenings of the W3C org.

My bible is O'Reilly's, "HTML and XHTML: The Definitive Guide". Don't muck about, get this book! Seriously.

Danny Goodman's "Dynamic HTML" book is good too, but it's getting a little dated.

I also highly recommend O'Reilly's "Cascading Style Sheets" book, by Eric Meyer. It rocks my world.

The sad thing is, "correct" HTML doesn't always work... the major browsers don't adhere to the standards set by the W3C, so it's a lot of trial and error to keep up with all of the bugs, documented, and otherwise. You should also check out the developer areas at Netscape and Microsoft.

I've been learning using "HTML 4.0 for the web, a visual quickstart" That is simply a great book and a great series. It tells you exactly which tags from past HTML have been depreceted, introduces CSS, DHTML, and JavaScript and teaches in a no nonsense 'fun' way for the begginer to intermediate. The book is also a stepping stone to further Quickstart books on scripting and CSS and DHTML. And at 20 bucks u can't complain!
