A couple of months ago, my father changed a prefernce file & gained support for a scanner & OmniPage. This was in OS 9, but I was duly impressed nonetheless.

So, I got to thinking about this idea & started looking at the files for Library/Printers/Epson, and after making a copy of the SC740 Plugin, I decided to open the files and do a search & replace for SC740 & put in its place, SC3000. I thought this MIGHT work but my hopes were not high.

I am clearly not a programmer.

Now, needless to say, when PrintCenter attempts to launch with the modified plug in, it quits unexpectedly.

Is this just a futile attempt? Can things like this be successful or is more a matter of ¥ˆ¥????ƒ†.

I don't care if the printer won't be FULLY supported. I just want to print from native Apps while I wait for Epson to do thier thing with drivers.

Any thoughts, you crafty Programmers / Hackers?

Any programmer worthy of answering this, long ago discovered that OS X ships with complete source to build a printer module. They would have simply modified the PCL commands in the sample to Epson's ESC P/2 commands (available in the GhostScript source), modified the recognition mechanism to recognize their Epson printer and been done.

The truth is that people are willing to wait as long as necessary for Epson to release a driver, which they feel they are entitled to receive free. And given that Epson will eventually release a driver, there's no incentive for any programmer to waste his/her time on this exercise.
