As I am downloading the October 2000 PB developer tools from Apple for this weekend's OS X install fest I am wondering whether there are updated dev tools and how to get them? Anyone have more recent dev tools than October 2000? Should I sign up to the $500 ADC membership? Any opinions?
Does anyone know whether the PB dev tools will "expire" just like the OS X PB?

There will be new tools. They will probably be put up on the 24th and might ship with OS X (although that is still a big rumor). The PB ones will work fine but the tools that are about to come out will be more compatible with complex applications.

I love the fact that the OS ships with dev tools. Apple never (to my knowlege) shipped dev tools with any OS before. This is wondeful! It saves me a long download.

I think that the reason they are distributing developer tools for free (as well as the rumour of with the OS) is because OS X is a Unix. Every Unix (as well as other *NIX) OSes come with cc at the very least. These are, by heritage, developer platforms. It isn't enough to be able to use Unix, you have be be given the tools to do whatever you want with it. Such is true with OS X. It also puts pressure on IDE developers (Metrowerks, Borland) to develop amazing IDEs for the platform. On any non-Unix system you still expect to pay for bare-bones tools but on Unix you only pay if it is phenomenal. I am anxious for the release of JBuilder on OS X. I have used the windows version before and it is very well made. For the time being, I will stick with what Apple gives me, though. It is much cheaper and I still want to see Java 2 runtime on OS X before I abandon the Obj-C I have learned.
Sweet Sweet OS X!
Jeff.

I am very glad that Apple is welcoming us Unix guys! I am looking forward to cutting some code for OS X.
