I am trying to figure out how to get the Finder to update the background image without killing it. No matter how much I change the data in the file that the Finder points to, it still shows the same image until I logout or kill the Finder. Alternatively, a programmatic way of changing the Desktop image like the preferences in the Finder do. I do not want to change the defaults and then kill the FInder, that is not an option.

This was discussed on cocoa-dev a while back, and the conclusion (by an Apple employee) was that you don't. They're thinking about implementing it in a future release, though, or something.
