question: how hard would it be for a developer to create an Aqua Preferences Panel, which would implement various optimizations [outline effects over full-rendering 3-frame-per-second effects, turn off anti-aliasing, etc] to Aqua, but could also reside in the System Preferences? are System Preferences pretty closed off? if not, 'Aqua Preferences Panel' sounds like a killer app for someone...

This is nigh on impossible to implement unless you're an Apple employee. It would probably require implementation in the OS as well. And that would require access to the source code. Which would require being part of the OS X team.

well, various current mods like repositioning the Dock or changing the Genie seem to work off of existing OS X functions, and wouldn't be that hard to compile into a single app; is it possible that some of the things we seek, like turning off antialiasing or outline window resizing can't be *that* locked down, can they? if they were, Kaleidoscope wld be skipping plans for a X version, and as far as i know they're going for it..?

If someone could find the dictionary keys for NSUserDefaults that the OS was planning to look at (like with terminal transparency) you could do it. It appears as though most of Apple's applications (and I am guessing that the rest of the OS is like this) have implemented many of these features although they don't offer the options to change them (like I mentioned, the Terminal can be made transparent by adding an expected key to its plist). If someone knows where Apple publishes this information, we might be in luck.
But that is just speculation,
Jeff.

well, i decided to Search ADC for NSUserDefaults, and turned up a whole slew of stuff; but frankly, i'm completely out of my league. if you're not, try that search! =]
one interesting tidbit: i think i've found at least a few of the standard settings for window redrawing, and even skimming through this is of interest, since window redrawing is so terrible...

I forget where I read it, but if you do strings on an executable file from the terminal and then poke through the output you can turn up some interesting things... It might have been at stepwise, i just had a quick look and i couldn't see it, though. try the archives...
