Just on the Dev CD, AFAIK.

Yes, the assembler is on the DevTools, and you'll need the tools anyway because you'll probably want a linker too.

You do already ahve the tools, in /Applications/Installers. However they may not be up-to-date -- you'll probably want the December 2002 Tools if you can get them.

The DevTools come with quite a bit of documentation, including PPC Assembly.

Heh, that's great! I've dug all over the net looking for docs on PPC ASM and I had 'em on my harddrive the whole time. Nice...

Thanks for the tip!

Motorola, IBM, and the makers of Fantasm offer quite a bit of documentation on the PPC instruction set. OSX uses the PowerOpen ABI. If you're coming from an x86 background, prepare for a shock. RISC assembly is at least an order of magnitude more tedius than x86 assembly.

I found this document to be pretty useful. (It's not just for compiler authors)
PowerPC Compiler Writer's Guide

You'll have to ignore a lot of things that are specific to OS 9 and things that are specific to their assembler, but there is alot of good stuff at http://www.lightsoft.co.uk/. One of the authors has written some pretty decent articles about PPC assembly programming. I learned a method of converting unsigned short to float from him that puts the code generated by gcc to shame.
