There are 3 things that keep me booting into classic every now and again.
1 - cd burning (I have that patch installed for scsi drives, but it's far from perfect, and I can't even come close to burning at full speed).
2 - access to floppy disks (I have a beige g3).
3 - printing (I have an Apple Color StyleWriter 1500).
Now, I figure I can't do much of anything about number 1, but Apple should eventually (I hope) take care of it.
I don't see them doing much about 2 or 3. So, I was thinking perhaps I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately I don't know the first thing about writing drivers.
Does anyone have any idea how difficult it would be to write a driver for my printer? I'm guessing I'd need access to nitty gritty details about it, which Apple may be unlikely to divulge.
However, I think it wouldn't be quite so difficult to add floppy drive support.. at the very least, I'd learn a lot trying. Does anyone know the feasibility of doing this?
I figure this is where the open-sourceness of Darwin would come in handy.. on the
list of projects there, they don't really have anything that looks like it (unless it would go right in the kernel?)
I guess maybe my best bet would be just to go bug the darwin people, but I was wondering if anyone here could tell me how difficult this would likely be, and preferably point me to somewhere I could start learning about how to go about doing this.
Thanks,
parsec
