I was wondering, does anyone know the format that mail.app stores one's mail in? I know that the file structure is [mailbox name].mbox/mbox. The reason I want to know this is that I'm trying to program a little jsp which will let me check it remotely.

not familiar with the acronym RTFD, is it "Read the ****ing document" (as in RTFM) or RTF?

I'm not quite sure on *any* of this so don't take my word for it..

..but the impression I get is that RTFD stores everything inside one file(or what appears to be one file?).

like say you have an embedded picture in some text...
RTF links to it. So, if the image moves or is deleted you're missing the image in the RTF file later.
..and RTFD makes a copy of the image and holds onto it(somehow) so you'll never come up with a missing image.

Like I said though, I'm really not sure. It's just the impression I got from reading through the API docs.

As far as I can tell, it's an enhancment to the standard UNIX mbox format. the file mbox (inside the folderName.mbox directory) appears to conform to the standard IIRC (I don't have an OS X box here at work to check on). For more info, try typing

man mbox

at the command line. If that doesn't work, look here:

These are standard mbox files. They are exactly the same as Eudora's mail boxes but with Unix line feeds. Trust me, I just imported an assload of my OE5 email in to Mail.app via Eudora 5 free and CRLF for the LF conversion.

It worked like a champ.

RTFD stands for RTF Directory. It's a bundle/package/whatchamacallit.

RTF stands for Rich Text Format which (AFAIK) is an acutal real M*cros*ft invention.
