This is actually reopen a thread which has been closed. I downloaded gmp-3.1.1 from
http://www.hyperdigm.com/downloads.htm . It compiled easily except for the directory mpn.
M4 seems to have some problems there. It produces tmp-* files with a junk character at the end. Not knowing anything about m4, I removed them each time by hand and then ran the compiler. The tests ran perfectly afterwards, and I have had no problems using the library.
