One of the cool things about the old Mac OS was being able to resedit many programs UI's to my liking, I'm trying to figure out how to do with with non-nibs based Carbon apps (like AOL instant messenger) - any thoughts?

If I'm not mistaken the resources are compiled in to the software. So there's no way to do it.

Don't bother. It'll be hard and you can't do much. The thing you'd do is edit the resource fork with ResEdit or, if there is no resource fork, find the resource file, use some utility to swap it from being in the data fork to the resource fork, edit it, and then convert it back. So, if you haven't used ResEdit, there isn't a whole lot that you can do. You can change some strings in the program, you can change the window type, maybe move around a few UI elements but that's about it.

Well... If it uses a WIND resource then you could probably hack that, but otherwise, you can't really. I suspect the windows are created in code, and unless you want to seriously reverse engineer the program you can't change it.
