For the past 16 years, a low-ley high-tech conference has met in Ann Arbor, MI. The huge stacks of pizza and caffeinated beverages of all kind let you know that you're entering the den of a very particular animal: the elusive Mac hacker. And here, once a year like the salmon of Capistrano, we meet en-masse to celebrate and hack into the wee hours of the morning.

No, this is not a place where you will learn how to break into computer systems or crack passwords -- it is a meeting of Mac programmers and techheads from all walks of life. Here is the MacHack FAQ:

http://www.machack.com/2002/faq2002.html

MacHack starts at 12:01am on June 20th, and goes straight on through to June 22nd -- many people don't sleep for the duration, especially when they are working away on their hack contest entry.

It's a whole lot of fun -- if you're interested in attending, check out the MacHack web site:

http://www.MacHack.com/

I'll see ya there!

I'd love to go, but my parents wouldn't be too happy about me missing my stupid poxy "internal examinations" at school (the ones which don't count for anything whatsoever). Oh yes, and the flight from this side of the pond isn't cheap

I'm going to do my best to be there. Assuming I can get those days off of work I intend to volunteer, as $425 is a bit much for me.

I'd go, but I don't know if I'm good enough to make it worth going...

I'd love to go, but I just can't afford the trip, etc... too bad they've already sold all of the student slots. I could really use a face to face talk with someone that has a clue about Cocoa. There aren't exactly very many mac users in this big banking city. There definately aren't many developers.

Well, I'm slowly learning on my own.
Hopefully, my product will be done by the next time MacHack roles around.

I'm familiar with the annual MacHack (although I've never been). Many interesting things always come from it. My favorite hack is still the version of Pong that someone got to run on Open Firmware. (That was a few years ago.)

So tell us, moki (since you started this thread) ... What hacks have you produced at past MacHacks? (Don't tell me you're the guy who wrote Pong ) And do you suppose everybody, or nearly everybody, will be hacking OS X this year, or will there be a sizable Luddite contingent still hacking 9? (Your answer to this should be that nearly everybody will be hacking X -- otherwise, you'll have to face the wrath of the moderators for mis-posting this in the wrong forum, and see your thread damned to (*shudder*) the Lounge.)
Dang! I forgot to uncheck the "Show Signature" button again!

Perhaps you should take your own advice once in a while

From www.machack.com:
It's happened again. We've filled the available student registration slots. Sorry gang, no more of the $50 bargain matinee.

Well, everyone's already said it for me, but I'll chime in, too.

Wish I could go, and my all-time-fav is also the open-firmware pong. That was freakin' genius! Video hardware access from a Forth interpreter! Awesome!

I may, I have not decided yet. Last year was a blast, but things here pretty busy right now.

So can anyone who's going or who has been there beat $85/night on lodging? I can save $524 for registration by volunteering, but $340 is still a bit of money.
