Forgive my ignorance - I've only had this Powerbook turned on for about 20 minutes. I'm trying to download the developer tools from ADC, and I continually get Illegal Port Command. I've tried poking through the preferences for IE, but I can't seem to find anything controlling the FTP settings.

What do I need to do?

Get a real browser. (Sorry, I couldn't resist).

I refuse to pay for Opera. I downloaded Mozilla 0.9.6, but it crashes repeatedly. Netscape 6 is slow as can be. Make a suggestion.

I downloaded the update to IE, and it is working now.

You need to turn on Passive FTP

The problem is that your FTP connection is getting blocked by a firewall or other NAT-based system on your network.

Check the System Preferences -> Network -> Proxies -> Use Passive FTP

IMHO, given the number of people using NAT boxen nowadays and the lack of problem using passive even without running NAT, Passive should be on by default.

I've actually got my NAT box shutdown right now. The status bar showed 'Entering passive mode' right before it tried to set the port and got the error. Anyway, the update to IE fixed the problem for me.
