I've used gvim for a long time on Solaris and really dig it. I'm looking for a text editor with colored syntax highlighting for Perl, common shell scripts (Bourne, Korn, C), and if possible, Java and C++. Perl and Bourne shell are the most important. XML and HTML support would be a big plus.

GVIM on Solaris handles all of these.

I've downloaded VIM 6.0, but the OSX terminal window can't seem to handle color! Is this right?

Will BBEdit Lite handle this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I just downloaded BBEdit Lite, and it does not do color highlighting. According to the BB web site, you need the $120 full version to get this capability. I'm not willing to pay $120 for this.

So, what are my options? I really just want GVIM for OSX.

Take a look at BBEdit cross-upgrade policies. You may own one of the other programs that entitles you to get the discount on BBEdit. I think it drops it down to $79.

You can get vim to do colors in a Terminal window. If you download
the source and compile it using "configure" and "make", you can
get a terminal version of vim. Then in your vimrc put "syntax on",
and it should get you color.

Okay, I'll try that. Where is the official place to get the VIM 6.0 source?

Yes, Vim 6 definitely works with syntax highlighting for me. If you have XDarwin installed you can probably run gvim itself, in which case you wouldn't have to look for an alternative.

BBEdit 6.5 supports most of those languages, if not all (I don't remember specifically which), but if you're used to vim, no point shelling out that much money.

Apple also has a much more convenient Vim 6 package installer if you want to save some time. Just make a ~/.vimrc file with the following lines:

<font face = "courier">set showmode
syntax enable</font>

And you should be on your way.

You might want to try Pepper. It's what I use. It's shareware at $45, but it's worth it; this program is great. It also has support for all of the languages you mentioned, including HTML and XML.

Unforutnately, it doesn't do CSS yet. But I can wait for that one.

[EDIT: Oops; I had the price wrong. I'd thought it was only $30. But it's still very good, and still a better price than BBEdit.]

is what you're looking for. Just hope you have a fairly fast computer as it's written in Java. Works like a dream on x86 from about 450mhz up.
