Unix Tools Are There!!!

IMPORTANT!!
Most of the files listed in Ian's script are there! Login as root with your usual password.
I tested some of the commands but not all. For example though, /usr/bin is chocked full of stuff not visible, even in term, when logged in as normal.
I was so pissed that they did not appear to be there. I even wrote a beta feedback to Apple about it. They are probably still laughing at me [us].
Try it, see for your self. Unless I did something special, they will be there for you too...

What new tools appeared?
I didn't see anything new appear in /usr/bin when I logged in as root.
Most UNIX commands were already in /usr/bin, but compilers (except for Java).

This may have been a result of individually installing the Essentials and Developer packages off the OS X DP4 cd. If you have the cd, and can't locate those files on your machine, try installing them from the cd. Also, Apple's installer app (after you have gotten a few steps into the installation process) has a menu choice for viewing the files to be installed and their target directories. Most of the apps that these two packages install are worthless for the PB, but all the Unix stuff works.

Seems to be a misunderstanding: I was talking about OS X PB and you about OS X DP 4...
BTW, I haven't seen any C++ compiler in your list and most of these tools (if not all) are already available in OS X PB.

I was refering to OS X PB. The packages 'Developer' and 'Essentials' were installed onto OS X PB from the OS X DP4 cd. The c++ compiler is infact there, I have used it to install 'ncurses' (avail. from freshmeat.net) and a few other libs, with the 'make' command. Like I said though, I'm not certian if the files contained in /usr/lib were there prior to the installation of these two packages.

No, a lot of them weren't there before you installed the Developer.pkg from OSXDP4 CD :-)
CC is the c compiler, btw, and it's definitely NOT included as standard with the PB.

Atleast we know this...
If you don't want to wait for the dev cd, and 100+ MB download is a little too much for your stomach (1.e. 56k modem) - install the packages off your DP4 cd, if you got it.

I installed the developer tools off of the DP4 CD several weeks ago before my PB Dev Tools CD arrived. While that worked great for command line compiles, all of the IDE tools would fail to launch.
Also, when I finally did get my Dev Tools CD, the package would refuse to install on my system. I ended up having to reinstall OS X PB from scratch to get the official PB Dev Tools to install.
I did quite a bit of initial tinkering with my system, so the DP4 tools may not have caused the problem I had, but beware. It just may have.

I wish all of us had access to these tools. I'm trying to cross-compile a few command line and X windows apps. I got the basic cc from Darwin 1.0 (which is egcs not gcc BTW). I need libm, which I can get from the Darwin CVS site, but fails to make, because javaconfig is nowhere to be found. Anybody know a source for either?

I had the same results.
