Anybody out there who has gotten their DevTools CD willing to post the installer somewhere so we don't have to wait several more weeks?
Yes, I've read the various means of installing tools from Darwin or DP4, but it all sounds rather dodgy.

I think we are all under an NDA. Besides that the compilation and most of the tools would be (c) to Apple and so posting it would be an infringment even without the NDA.

That would likely be illegal. Your best option is to become an online ADC member (0 cost) and wait till the middle of October when they post them online. You will still need your own copy of OSX obviously and I don't think you will be able to get them without being a member of the ADC but as I said online membership is free so what do you have to lose.

Does anyone know what the differences between the online downloadable version and the mailed-out CD are likely to be? I don't mind paying $30 for the beta, and downloading the dev tools, but I am just curious about if there are any differences in the toolset.

its $0 to setup an ADC account, not to get the mailouts etc, you still get the ADC newsletters etc, and you have access to the ADC downloads section. I am using this at the moment.

OK, OK. So I registered for the ADC. My point was, I didn't want to wait for the dev tools, and I didn't want to risk installing the inappropriate ones from DP4 or Darwin. I know I will get them free sometime in October. And yes, I assumed posting these tools would be not entirely legal, but Apple will be releasing them soon anyway, so it doesn't seem like that big a deal.

Actually... the whole "big deal" you speak of is quite a big deal for those developers who do pay whatever it is they pay to join the ADC.
See, it's sort of like paying Celera Genomics money so that you don't have to *wait* two weeks/months for the Human Genome Project to catch up. You get the goods before everyone else because you're paying a premium for that privilege.
ADC members pay a premium so that they will receive such tools as the *Developer* Tools (D in ADC) before the general public. Allowing everyone to get the dev tools immediately wouldn't make it very attractive to pay for your ADC membership because there wouldn't be a reason to pay.

yes. It is too bad Celera Genomics is a rip-off. Random 500-basepair sequences. Nothing is put together. And if some else on site logs on, you get bumped off! What a ripoff!
But I guess this is off the subject.

I think that charging so much money for all these development tools
is a mistake on Apple's part. Clearly, the Macintosh platform is now
fighting for its life and anything Apple can do to garner interest from
the programmer community will be a boon. Therefore, I can't understand
why Apple makes it so hard for programmers to get started. This
Byzantine process of signing up with the ADC and then hunting around
for scraps of information and tools is going to turn away a lot of
curious people and ultimately hurt the platform. In my case, I just
wanted to get a few standard Unix tools like gcc, rcs, and make; but
soon it became a weird odyssey of scouring web sites and forums. This
is counter to the culture of open source development. It feels like
Apple doesn't want to give up its miserly control over every aspect of
the platform and if all the tools were free and easy to acquire, the
sky would come crashing down. If Apple can take down the barriers coders
will flock to MacOS X. Otherwise, I wouldn't give it much chance for
long-term survival.

I think it's cool that apples posting the dev tools. The online membership is great. I'm thrilled that I get to play with this stuff without spending anything but download time. Members who pay deserve to get this stuff first.
