I'm not a serious programmer although I've dabbled in a few languages and am trying to learn Objective-C.

Here's my question: Does one need proprietary information from printer manufacturers to write drivers?

It is frustrating not being able to print to my [ether-networked] Epson printer. Are programmers helpless to develop drivers without Epson's collaboration, or is an independent and/or generic hack possible?

I wouldn't know where to begin to write a driver but I wanted to know if there is any hope that we will have drivers sooner than those produced by Epson.

I would be anxious to read any comments. Thanks.
