I'd like to get some book recommendations from my fellow OS X developers.

I know there aren't many Mac OS X specific books out there, but I'm sure there are plenty of good UNIX and GNU texts. And a good software engineering or computer science book can be useful for any platform or language. I am an experienced programmer, but by no means an expert. I'd like to learn more about UNIX, databases, OO, and user interface design.

Here are some books that caught my eye while browsing on Amazon.com:

Programming With Gnu Software (Nutshell Handbook)
by Michael Kosta Loukides, et al

Data Modeling
by G. Lawrence Sanders

Refactoring : Improving the Design of Existing Code (Addison-Wesley Object Technology Series)
by Martin Fowler, et al

GUI Bloopers: Don'ts and Do's for Software Developers and Web Designers
by Jeff Johnson

Has anyone read these?

What are your favorite programming books?

Practical C++ Programming
This is a great book. I actually just bought this two weeks ago.

Programming Perl
This book has always been highly recommended and it's been in my wish list for a few years. Now that I own a modern OS with perl I should probably pick it up.

I also liked Java in a Nutshell. This book was my crash course in Java and OOP coming from a C background. It's also a very convenient API reference.

I'd like to recommend Java: An Introduction to Computer Science and Programming, by Walter Savitch (Prentice Hall -- ISBN=0-13-287426-1). Very pedagogical and friendly and does not assume previous programming knowledge. I've not finished working through it yet (there doesn't seem to be enough spare time, I'm afraid). Good luck!

I second "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment". It's THE UNIX book.

As for some my other favorites, here they are in no particular order:

"The C Programming Language" by K&R

All three volumes of "The Art of Computer Programming" by Knuth

"Crafting a Compiler in C"

"Fundamentals of Object Oriented Design in UML"

Both "Core Java" books.

"Programming Windows" by Charles Petzold (I can here the sneers now)

"Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid" (not strictly a programming book, but goes over many important concepts)

"Operating System Concepts" aka "The Dinosaur Book"

Almost all of my old college textbooks.

I'll think of some more later.
