I went cruising through the /System directory today on my 10.1 machine and found something interesting, something I didn't notice before. At /System/Library/PHP/ ise, what I can only guess, a full PEAR installation. I've not noticed any documentation about this directory on Apple's site, and since it's in the System dir, I assume they don't want me fiddling with it.

Does anyone know why its there?

PEAR is PHP's response to CPAN in Perl (a collection of modules). What is so unusual about this?

according to php.net there is a serious incompatibility in the latest php version (specifically in the PEAR modules) on OSX10.1. But a nice guy here in Switzerland has built a workaround and provides the binary for download. You can get it at Marc Lavange's site.

I'm not questioning PEAR's existence, but why Apple has included it and yet provides no documentation of it, not even on their InternetDev site that has a tutorial on PHP on OS X. I just thought it was interesting. Is anyone here writing against the /System/Library/PHP/ installation?
