It's real, it works, we're testing it to make sure it really works (for
instance, it compiles the Finder's plain C++ OK), and we're seeding people
to get further testing before making the compiler widely available. If
you want to try it right now, just send mail to Godfrey diGiorgi,
ramarren@apple.com, and include "Objective-C++ seeding" in the title
so he'll notice the message.

Also, to head off any confusion, this is strictly an addition to the
current 2.95.2-based compiler. We're still working on a plan for how
to make sure it's available for gcc3 also.

This is excellent news, in my opinion. (Please don't flood the poor guy's mailbox! I'd like Objective-C++, but I can wait).

Excuse the ignorance. What exactly is Obj-C++? I know C++ pretty well, and I've fiddled a bit with Obj-C. Is this some funky hybrid language that brings Obj-C runtime features to C++, or just a compiler that can deal with C++ and Obj-C in the same file?

AFAIK, it can handle C++ classes as well as ObjC classes, however, C++ classes remain as they were.

It's the latter. Objective-C++ simply lets you mix ObjC and C++ code in the same file -- ObjC objects can have C++ objects as instance variables/parameters (and can call methods on them), and vice versa. It essentially makes interfacing between ObjC and C++ code much much easier, as otherwise you'd have to make C wrappers for code written in the one language to be called by the other. Typically this is used for Cocoa frontends to core functionality written in C++.
