Just downloaded Tinkertools, and got a .dmg file. Someone on the forum also kindly sent me it, but it arrived as .nib, .string etc etc files...

I have no idea how to turn either files into a usable program. I have been using Macs for a good few years, but have no experience of Unix, developing etc etc.

I have installed the developer tools but have had a look and can't get any of the applications to launch (they are installed on a seperate internal HD to X)..I am pretty stuck.

Any help would be appreciated!

TIA

Marc

This is not a developer-related question.

If you don't understand how to use .dmg files then something is seriously wrong. ** HINT HINT ** DOUBLE CLICK IT ** HINT HINT **. It's a disk image. It will launch Disk Copy and mount as a little disk on your desktop. From there, open it, and copy the app to wherever you want to keep it on your HD. Now, that wasn't difficult, was it?

.nib, .string, etc are all the internal files of the program. The program should be called TinkerTool.app or similar. You shouldn't be able to see the .app extension, and it should appear as a single file in the Finder, which will run when double-clicked.

I realise that .dmg files are disk images! however in this case, it would not work when double clicked upon. I downloaded the file on a number of occasions but still had the same problem. Every time I "*Hint Hint* *double click**Hint Hint*" on the file it instead launched Quick Time....

Hence the emailing to me of another copy of the application. In this email all the component parts of Tinkertools were present, however no file called 'tinkertools' that launched the application when double clicked on...hence the problem.

It was unclear to me at the time whether I could construct the program from the component parts if necessary, and it was a reply to this question that I was really after.

After much searching of numerous web sites, I have finally got a working copy of the application, so my initial query seems somewhat superfluous. I realise that my initial post was somewhat vague as to the actual nature of my problem, however, I thank you for your response, sarcasm and all.

Peace

Marc
